How To Become A Morning Person

There’s a well-known Benjamin Franklin quote that states how important getting up early is. The quote reads; ‘early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.' This means that those of us who get up earlier, are more likely to be successful. It might have been said some 200 years ago, but it still rings true today. Admittedly, getting up early isn’t always easy. Especially if you’re more of a night owl than an early bird, but with a few small changes, it is possible.

Go to bed earlier

Okay, so this might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people don’t think of it. If you want to be able to get up earlier, go to bed earlier. Your body needs a certain amount of sleep to function - usually between eight and 10 hours a night, so you need to ensure that you’re getting this. Aim to go to bed earlier, to ensure that by the time your alarm goes off; you’ll have had plenty of sleep.

Put your alarm away from your bed

One of the biggest mistakes we make when it comes to getting up early is putting our alarm clocks - or smartphones, close to our beds. If your alarm is close to your bed, it’s far too easy to lean over and hit snooze. If however, you place your alarm away from your bed, so that you have to get up to turn it off. This means that you’re more likely to get up earlier as once you’re out of bed, you’re up.

Have an incentive for when you get up

What’s your favourite breakfast treat? Are you a lover of pastries, do you love fresh fruit for breakfast or is coffee your morning must-have? Whatever you love to start the day with, make sure you have it in stock and use it as an incentive to get you out of bed. For example, if you love good coffee, invest in a quality coffee machine for the mornings. Or, if you love fresh pastries, keep a bag of part-cooked ones in the freezer then pop them in the oven when you get up. An incentive can work wonders for turning a night owl into an early bird.

Work out in the mornings

If you opt to workout in the mornings, rather than in the evenings, you’ll find that you have more energy. This will help to prevent you feeling lethargic because you got up early, and will also boost how fast your metabolism works for the rest of the day. Plus, by exercising straight after waking up, your body will burn almost twice the amount of calories as it normally would.
